Household budgeting in Malta
Plan for the bills that don’t arrive every month.
Salary may arrive monthly, while vehicle licence, insurance, ground rent and subscriptions follow different calendars. A yearly cash-flow plan helps distinguish regular spending from months with larger payments.
Hypothetical example: a €600 vehicle insurance bill due in March is a €600 March payment. Its monthly planning allocation is €50 across a full January–December year, not €50 plus the March bill. These are two views of the same cost.
A €5,000 opening savings balance with €200 monthly contributions and no withdrawals reaches €7,400 at year end, assuming 0% growth. Contributions reduce available cash and increase tracked savings; they are transfers, not consumption.
This is an evergreen household planning tool, not an official Budget measure, bank connection or entitlement calculation. The model uses the amounts and timing you enter, in integer euro cents; negative cash is retained and flagged. It does not calculate investment returns or loan amortisation.
Questions before you start
Should I enter gross or net income?
Enter amounts received after income tax and National Insurance. This planner does not deduct them again. Use the salary or self-employed calculator separately if you need a gross-to-net estimate.
How are annual insurance, licence and servicing costs handled?
Enter the annual amount and payment month. The default monthly allocation view spreads the cost across active months and reserves it before calculating remaining savings. The actual payment view retains the due-month cash check. These are two views of the same bill, never two expenses.
Is an opening loan balance a January expense?
No. Opening debt is a liability at 1 January, not an expense or a cash deduction. Only entered repayments reduce cash. Closing principal is not estimated because repayment and interest details alone do not establish a verified amortisation schedule.
Is cash left over automatically treated as savings?
Accumulated savings shows cumulative net income minus allocated living costs and debt repayments. Opening balances are separate. Savings-account contributions and withdrawals are internal transfers, so they do not change this remaining-income amount. Actual bank cash and tracked accounts are also shown separately.
Can I edit the Excel budget after downloading?
Yes. Monthly input cells and opening balances can be edited in the Inputs & Assumptions sheet. Linked totals and balance formulas recalculate in a compatible spreadsheet application. Exported charts are static images; their formula-driven source tables remain editable.
Are my entries stored?
No. Budget entries stay in this page’s browser memory. Refreshing or closing the page may discard them. The downloaded Excel file is your local copy; the tool does not upload it.
